In April 1955, a small group of Baptists met in the basement of what had been an old dwelling house and organized themselves into a new mission church. Rev. Lemuel Burgiss, from Florida, was called to be the first pastor. On August 28, 1955, the mission was constituted into North Park Baptist Church with 28 charter members. Membership grew and they began to outgrow the old house. On May 11, 1956, a basement for a new building was begun. The first services were held in the basement of the building on August 12, 1956, and by November 4 of that same year the first services were held in the new auditorium above the basement. Rev. Earl J. Guth was pastor.
In 1959, Rev. G. O. Pitney was called to be pastor and, under his leadership, the church continued to grow with Sunday School attendance topping 100 for the first time.
As the church continued to grow and flourish, more space was needed. In May 1967, under the leadership of Rev. Norman Gardner, the education wing was completed with office space and 9100 square feet of classrooms for the expanding Sunday School. By that fall, Sunday School attendance had reached 299 for the first time.
During the hard economic times of the 70’s and 80’s, under the leadership of men like Rev. Howard Bundick and Rev. Ray Mc Cain, continued ministry kept the Sunday School average up to 250. The church basement was remodeled and several adjacent properties were purchased for increased parking and Sunday School space.
In 1989, the Grange Hall next to the church, was purchased and under the leadership of Rev. Ron Meyer, was remodeled for youth and other activities. Also, during his time as pastor, the multi-purpose building was erected and has allowed the church room to continue to grow.
In the Spring of 2004, Rev. Kevin Kerr became Senior Pastor at First Baptist Church and since then, we have been moving forward to add more more lives to the Kingdom under his leadership.
